Keep Calm & Read Bookroo
This month we received an email from Bookroo with an awesome deal for you, our readers, and an awesome deal for us. They offered to send us a one-month box of their books so that we could highlight to you how awesome their book subscription is – AND to share the amazing offer they’re currently holding for the entire month of September.
So, what is the deal? Well, we’ll get there in a second. Let’s talk about why they’re doing their “Keep Calm & Read On” back-to-school campaign. Bookroo understands how difficult life has been for everyone, especially our kids who have been adapting to virtual learning since Spring. Reading is such an important tool for kids to learn and let their imaginations soar to new heights. They want to help be a part of positive engagement with our kids by providing a great discount on their subscription service, since reading is such an important fundamental process in children’s growth.
“Reading regularly with young children stimulates optimal patterns of brain development, strengthens parent-child relationships at a critical time in child development, which, in turn, builds language, literacy, and social-emotional skills that last a lifetime,” says the American Academy of Pediatricians.
And can I just say – Bookroo does not disappoint! You have three options to choose from when picking your monthly subscription: Board Books, Picture Books, or Chapter Books. We chose chapter books since Adelaide and Marshall are starting to move out of the picture book phase, (though, do you ever really move out of that phase?!) and they are starting to enjoy chapter books.
What a Bookroo Subscription Looks Like
We received 2 hardback chapter books shortly after requesting them. At first, I wasn’t sure about these books. They have beautiful covers, but the text inside looked a little too difficult for our 6 and almost 8-year-old. No worries, momma read both books in about 2 ½ days, and I ended up falling in love with these books.
The first one I picked up was Horton Halfpott. This is a wacky book with wacky characters, and a wacky plot. I have to be honest; it took me a little while to get into this one, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. This is a crazy mystery about a missing “lump” that presumably has a high value but turns out to just be a piece of junk. The crazy characters search for clues, follow leads, get into a little trouble, and eventually save the day!
The second book was a bit longer, but boy was it worth the read! The Great Adventures Guide To Successful Escapes was hard to put down and I was super tired on my Google Meets the next day! It is a story about two 13-year-old orphans who are about to be freed from the horrible orphanage they live in. They are introduced to a great adventure. An adventure to save the world! Seeing the perseverance and determination in the characters make this story even more loveable. While it is above my kids’ current reading level, we will be making this a read aloud in our home.
That’s one of the great things about chapter books, even if they are a little too advanced, you can always make time for a read aloud and snuggle (those days of endless snuggles will end one day and we will be sad when they do!).
Our Winey Parent Verdict
So, is Bookroo worth the monthly subscription? I would say, “YES!”
Oh, did I mention each book was gift wrapped? That’s like getting a real present in the mail! Who doesn’t like to unwrap gifts? Bookroo would also make a really great gift for birthdays or holidays (hint, hint grandma!). I know we have enough “stuff” in our house, but books are definitely not in the “stuff” category and you can never have enough of them! So give Bookroo a try, and let us know how you like it!
Through the month of September, use the code: KEEPCALM, and you’ll get 20% off any 3-month subscription. Not only did I really enjoy these books, I think this is a perfect opportunity to give you and your kids quality books plus a nice discount!
As we’re all trying to stay positive and adapt to our stay-at-home lives, head over to Bookroo to Keep Calm & Read On.
