Easy Holiday Craft for Kids: Chain Character

Chain Character Crafts

As we get closer to Christmas, we’re always looking for ways to have our kids engage in some kid of craft. They really like the hands-on approach, so building a character from paper chains is perfect for them.

Follow the simple steps below and your kids will create their own special character in no time!

  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Markers
  • Googly Eyes
  • Various Scraps of Paper to Decorate (Optional)

Directions

  • Cut out strips of paper
    • Depending on what character you want to make, will dictate the color of your paper strips)
      • Marshall made an elf chain alternating red and green paper to make a pattern
      • Adelaide made a snowman chain, so her paper strips were all white
    • Using the strips, model for your child how to build the chain and let them go at it
  • Choose how many chains to make for each character
    • We made 25 chains so they would have one chain to remove each day of the month of December, leading up to Christmas
  • Glue chains together
  • Add googly eyes for fun!
    • After they glued on some googly eyes, they also drew on noses and mouths

Extra Steps

I cut out hats for each one and they glued those on as well. Once they are done, hang them up somewhere where they will be able to easily reach them. They can remove one chain for each day leading up to the holiday.

Mix it up

This craft can be done throughout the year. If they’re excited about their birthday or a family vacation, this is perfect. They can watch the chain get smaller and smaller as the special event gets closer.

Voila! Just like that, we’re done. To see more crafts from the Winey Parent, check out our Activities and Crafts page. If you like this craft, don’t forget to share this with all of your winey parent friends.
